Los Angeles County Case Lookup

Interested parties can look up Los Angeles County court cases through resources provided by the superior court. The resources for accessing court records may include the following:

Online searches and requests through official platforms

The superior court maintains online repositories for case summaries and calendars. Note that case summaries do not contain full court information; they only include important facts about court events and judicial decisions. Inquirers can access the record by conducting searches on these platforms:

To search court records, interested parties may use the "Login" or "Continue as a Guest" option before inputting relevant data. The court will charge fees for retrieving requested court summaries. In addition, guests and registered users are charged differently on the platform. Note that the search platforms only accept credit or debit card payments for online searches.

Note: Los Angeles Superior Court restricts online searches for restricted or sealed court records. Such records are only accessible through mail-in or walk-in request options.

Walk-in requests at the court’s physical locations.

For walk-in requests, interested parties must first determine the case category of the court record. Next, they must call the courthouse that is handling cases for that specific category. You can verify record availability by calling these centers:

  • Family Law Call Center: (213) 633-6363
  • Probate Call Center: (213) 830-0850
  • Archives and Records Center: (213) 830-0198 (for civil and criminal cases filed before 2004).

In contrast, you must directly call the courts to determine the availability of civil, juvenile, and criminal cases.

The courthouses have physical kiosks through which you can view most court records. To access a sealed or confidential superior court record, you must present the appropriate form and valid ID at the courthouse clerk’s office. Note that the courthouses attend to all requests between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, except for court holidays.

Note: The superior court charges $0.5 per page and $40 per certification of court document.

Mail-in requests to the court’s mailing address.

Inquirers must follow this guide to access superior court records via mail-based requests:

  1. Fill out and print a court record request form. However, you must fill out the form LASC JUV 010 to request juvenile court records.
  2. Attach a valid government-issued ID if requesting sealed or confidential records.
  3. Include the required fee as a money order made payable to the Los Angeles Superior Court. Attach a payment submittal notice if you are using a credit card payment.
  4. Send the documents and fees in a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the courthouse that handled the case. For instance, you can send mail requests for juvenile court records to these courthouses:

Los Angeles Superior Court Case Search by Name.

In Los Angeles County, record seekers may name-search superior court case records through online search repositories and walk-in requests at the courthouses. Parties using online repositories may create an account before inputting the case party’s full name into the allocated search boxes.

Nevertheless, name-based searches are not an accurate means of finding court records. Inquirers using this option may end up with case files for different case parties with similar names. To get accurate search results, you must include additional data like the case number and filing date.

Los Angeles Superior Court Docket Search

Court dockets are records that contain summaries of all filings and judicial actions in relation to court cases. The records may also include information about stakeholders in court cases, such as the full names of case parties, attorneys, and judicial officers.

To search court dockets in Los Angeles, inquirers may visit the courthouse that handled the court case. The court may attend to in-person inquiries during open hours on weekdays. To get the records in person, inquiries must present relevant search information at the court’s physical address.

There are also options for viewing case summaries through the court’s online search databases. For example, you can view Los Angeles online summaries of criminal cases by providing relevant search data.

Court docket searches are important for different reasons, including the following:

  • It enables inquirers to track major milestones in court case proceedings.
  • It notifies inquirers of upcoming court dates and events.
  • Easy retrieval of court documents like pleadings, motions, transcripts, and orders.
  • Ensures transparency in court proceedings.

Lookup Los Angeles County Superior Court Online

Interested persons or entities can look up Los Angeles County Superior Court records through these official databases.

These official databases grant direct access to court records and may require users to register an account.

Conversely, third-party search platforms like Californiacourtrecords.us offer online access to superior court records in Los Angeles. These sites are generally easy to navigate and may allow direct downloads of court documents. However, they operate outside government jurisdiction and, as such, are not verifiable sources for accessing court records.

Supreme Court vs. Superior Court

In Los Angeles, the Supreme Court and Superior Court are responsible for overseeing all judicial-related issues. However, the courts differ in the following ways:

They have different jurisdictions
The Supreme Court has the highest appellate authority in the county. It reviews cases from courts of appeal and directly oversees appeals concerning death penalties and disciplinary cases of judicial officers. In contrast, superior courts, also referred to as trial courts, hear cases and determine the outcome based on presented evidence. The courts have jurisdiction over all cases in the county.

The courts have different judicial processes.
Seven judges preside over cases in the Supreme Court, and at least four of these judges must agree before passing an opinion. However, only one judge presides over a superior court in Los Angeles. The judge reviews evidence and opinions from juries before making a decision.
